Russia bolsters Novorossiysk port amidst threats to Black Sea Fleet

"Russia is taking steps to improve infrastructure in the port of Novorossiysk, located further east of Sevastopol," reports the British Ministry of Defence. This move is in response to the threat of potential Ukrainian attacks on the Black Sea Fleet base in Sevastopol, situated in occupied Crimea.

As part of the intelligence update, the Ministry of Defence released a satellite photo from April 1, showcasing the placement of missile systems on the Admiral Grigorovich-class frigate. This ship is currently stationed at the Black Sea Fleet base in Novorossiysk.

It has been reported that modern Russian ships, such as the Admiral Grigorovich-class frigates, come equipped with vertical launch missile systems.

These missiles can attack targets both at sea and on land. Previously, such missiles were loaded in Sevastopol in Crimea.

Moreover, the Ministry of Defence observed that the Black Sea Fleet has largely relocated its surface and submarine vessels from Sevastopol to Novorossiysk, which is situated further east. Following the dismissal of the Black Sea Fleet commander in March of this year, the fleet's activity has dropped to its lowest since the conflict began.

According to the British, the Black Sea Fleet is likely to continue staying in Novorossiysk, as it is considered the best way to evade Ukrainian attacks from the sea. Enhancing technical and logistical infrastructure aims to permanently boost the capabilities of this base.
