War in Ukraine: stay updated with our live coverage

According to Vlad, Russia "has turned into a problem for global order and democracy", thereby initiating a conflict not only with Ukraine but also against the "democratic world".

"Residents of Romania, akin to all inhabitants of the European Union and Europe at large, should be concerned. We need to adopt appropriate measures to prepare ourselves," added Vlad.

Is Moldova within Russia's sights?

Vlad, the head of the General Staff of Romania, emphasised that if Russia prevails in Ukraine, the Russian Federation "won’t refrain from potentially targeting Moldova and causing a rise in tensions in the Western Balkans".

- I am absolutely certain that President Putin will escalate tensions in the near future, stated Vlad.

NATO urged to "replenish weapons reserves"

The highest-ranking Romanian military officer has advised NATO countries to restock their weapons supplies and start preparing the citizens, potentially through implementing voluntary military service for all.

Meanwhile, in Romania, Vlad is advocating for legislative changes that can equip the nation to defend against Russian drones. He noted that the current legislation impedes this.

During the numerous strikes on Ukraine's Odessa, Russian drones have intruded into Romanian territory more than once.

Putin's plans: more countries on high alert for war

It's worth noting that similarly alarming statements have been made recently by military officials from various countries. The German Defense Minister, for instance, has suggested that Russia could assault an NATO member within the next 5-8 years.

The Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces, Mikael Buden and the Minister of Civil Defense, Carl-Oscar Bolin, have advised their citizens to prepare for the possibility of war. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, addressing the First Programme of Sveriges Radio said, -"The risk has escalated, although we have no evidence suggesting that war is imminent."

At the same time, the Supreme Commander of the Norwegian Armed Forces has stressed the importance of not losing sight of the "window of opportunity" to ready for a potential direct confrontation with Russia, as this period might soon slip by.
