For tennis enthusiasts, bidding farewell to Roger Federer was a tough pill to swallow. Now, they face a similar sentiment as Rafael Nadal navigates through his last season.

One of tennis's most celebrated figures, Nadal, suffered a season-ending injury last year. Despite making a comeback, these are clear to be his concluding efforts in the sport.

Nadal was particularly passionate about competing in his native land. He participated in the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona and the ATP 1000 event in Madrid, although he did not clinch titles in either tournament.

Tuesday (30 April) saw the 37-year-old's last appearance in Spain's capital. In the fourth round, he was bested by Jiri Lehecka (5:7, 4:6), prompting a spirited farewell at the match's conclusion.

The legendary player's match occurred during the evening session at Estadio Manolo Santana, with a packed audience of 12,000 people. Nadal received accolades from fans and organizers alike. Immediately following the match, banners commemorating his five victories in Madrid were displayed.

Additionally, the tournament director presented Nadal with a commemorative statue alongside his fellow player and friend Feliciano Lopez. As he departed the courts, fans applauded enthusiastically, and officials formed a guard of honour to show their respect for the tennis great.
