"We spoke recently and you asked me who would be a better choice for us as the future president of the U.S. I replied saying that we would cooperate with any president, but I suspect that for Russia, Biden would be more suitable. And judging by his recent statements, I am absolutely correct," Putin claimed on Thursday on Rossija 1, the national television channel.
The Russian leader thus addressed Joe Biden's comments during a speech in San Francisco where he referred to Putin as a "madman". Putin thought this was a reaction to his previous statement expressing his preference for Biden over Trump. Notably, as Putin enthusiastically emphasised, it was a completely suitable response to the situation and one he had foreseen, as Biden could not publicly express gratitude towards him.
"Why? Because he cannot say: 'Volodya, well done, thank you, you've helped me greatly'. We understand the situation from an internal political perspective, and such a reaction is utterly apt. Therefore, I was correct," Putin explained, donning a smile.
Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov had provided his commentary on Biden's words, suggesting that Biden had lowered the status of the United States.
