The Olympic Games represent the most ancient and largest international sports event. The inaugural event took place in Olympia, Greece. In those ancient times, a ceasefire was triggered by the games and all conflicts were temporarily put on hold. It's fascinating that while wars were suspended for 2 months, the actual sporting event only spanned 5 days. Contemporary games take place every 4 years and typically run for over two weeks. This is equally true for both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Countries fortunate enough to host this event, gain a unique elevated status. The upcoming Summer Olympics will be taking place in Paris, with the event commencing on 26 July 2024, and concluding on 11 August. So, what are the medals going to look like?

The XXXIII Olympic Games in Paris

This is set to be a groundbreaking international occasion and a grand sporting celebration. During the XXXIII Olympics, spectators will watch athletes compete in as many as 329 events (across 32 disciplines). This event will bring together athletes from around the globe and also attract scores of fans. Moreover, those fans unable to make it to France can follow the fate of athletes via their TV or online broadcasts. It is notable that the prestigious brand Chaumet, part of the LVMH group, has been tasked with creating outstanding awards fitting of this year's Olympic victors. The brand aimed to blend the historical and the contemporary in their medal design. Will the final result satisfy athletes and fans?

What will the medals to be awarded at the Paris Olympics look like?

The esteemed brand Chaumet, part of the LVMH Group, has designed this year's Olympic medals and has already showcased them. It's important to note that these awards will be presented during both the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games. The official presentation of the medals occurred shortly after the unveiling of the Olympic torch. So, what sets apart these highly coveted discs created by Chaumet?

Crucially, each and every medal crafted by Chaumet is made from original steel, sourced from the Eiffel Tower. While this is surely an unusual choice of material for medals, it represents a first in history. In creating these distinctive discs, the brand drew inspiration from three themes: the hexagon, the glow, and the setting. The medals also feature specially embossed lines that resemble rays of the sun, giving them a three-dimensional appearance. Intriguingly, these lines are not engraved, but impressed into the metal. This is intended to symbolise the radiance of France and the tenacity of the athletes. Each medal also features the goddess Nike, the Panathenaic Stadium, the Acropolis, and a French icon – the Eiffel Tower.
