The players took the lead without touching the ball
Football conjures up various scenarios, but situations like this are scarce. The Sport Recife team hosted Novorizontino in the 12th round of Brazil's Serie B. The stands were filled with numerous fans, none of whom likely expected to witness one of the season's most bizarre incidents.
The hosts started the match and quickly began exchanging passes amongst themselves. After a few seconds, the ball reached defender Alisson Cassiano, swiftly pressed by the visitors' left-back, Reverson. The distracted 30-year-old passed "without looking" towards the goal, not realising that the goalkeeper had moved out of the penalty area to get closer to the play. Consequently, in the 18th second of the match, Novorizontino took the lead without touching the ball.
Footage of the own goal immediately hit social media and went viral. Internet users were stunned that the defender could make such an unforgivable error. Hundreds of comments appeared, noting that this was probably the easiest lead in football history. Many people blamed the goalkeeper, noting that he shouldn't have left the goal in such a situation and that the defender had every right to pass this way.
"What is the centre-back doing? He didn't even look before passing the ball"; "Fire that goalkeeper immediately," wrote frustrated netizens.
