One could think that certain conspicuous symptoms, such as coughing up blood, are so clear-cut that they are impossible to disregard. Nonetheless, findings suggest many individuals underestimate these signals - said Dr. Julie Sharp, who occupies the role of director of health and patient engagement at Cancer Research UK.

Dr. Sharp highlighted the importance of prompt medical consultation if these six key symptoms manifest.

Blood in your urine

The detection of blood in your urine must not be overlooked. This is a red flag potentially signifying bladder cancer. Seeing blood in your urine even once is adequate reason to schedule a visit to your doctor without delay.

Alterations in bowel habits

Changes in the regularity of bowel movements, or differences in the look of your stool can be initial indications of colon cancer. It's crucial to eschew the taboo and chat openly about bowel issues with a doctor.

Stomach pain and indigestion

Symptoms that might seem trivial, like stomach pain or indigestion, should be brought up with a doctor if they persist for a month or more. Notably, discomfort in the upper stomach and back, worsening during eating or laying down, may be an early sign of pancreatic cancer.

Blood in stool

While haemorrhoids are the usual culprit of blood in the stool, it’s vital to understand that this could also be an indication of cancer. Early diagnosis is critical, so any instance of blood in the stool should be notified to a doctor without hesitation.

Unplanned weight loss

Unexpected weight loss, without deliberately striving for weight reduction, might be a warning sign. Research carried out by Oxford University shows this is one of the central symptoms of bowel, lung, pancreas and kidney cancer.

Continual cough

A cough might seem common during times of higher respiratory infection prevalence. However, if it lingers for more than three weeks, it could serve as an early sign of lung cancer. It is advised to consult a doctor for any case of an extended cough.

Recognising and discussing these symptoms with a professional can be critical for early detection and treatment of cancer.
