Over 40? Discover the three foodstuffs to incorporate daily for a graceful ageing process

Turning 40 is often viewed as a significant milestone in our society. But why this specific age? According to scientists, this is when we transition into what's commonly called middle age. Eliott Jacques, an esteemed Canadian psychologist, also linked the midlife crisis, also known as the "forty-something crisis", with this age. Pop culture often portrays this milestone as a farewell to relentless youth in films and music.

From a biological perspective, this age heralds the beginning of a new stage in human life. Progressive muscle loss, slowing metabolism and evident hormonal changes in the body are all characteristic features of this phase. The risk of various diseases, from atherosclerosis to degenerative joint disorders, can also increase. Our skin begins to lose its natural hydration and firmness, which is often quite noticeable when we look in the mirror. Many of us start to question: is it possible to halt this process?

What's possible and what's not

Unless you inhabit a fantasy world where witches can concoct rejuvenating elixirs for you, it's important to be realistic. The ageing of the body is a process that cannot be halted. However, it is possible to slow this process down. Such an endeavour is best undertaken by natural means and an appropriate diet.

Often, the conversation centres around cutting back on sweets, fatty meats, butter, and even certain overly sweet fruits. But let's view this positively. Instead of focusing on what you should avoid, consider a few food products you should incorporate into your daily diet after turning 40. Here are three recommendations.

  • Avocado. This fruit, which is high in good fats and is a source of vitamin E and glutathione, has numerous benefits. These three ingredients in avocado promote skin regeneration and protection, effectively slow down skin ageing, aid in wound healing, and help reduce skin discolouration.
  • Flaxseed. You should consider incorporating this food product into your diet for numerous reasons, one being its potential ability to slow the ageing process. This effect is attributed to flax seeds' proteins, vitamins, antioxidants and beneficial plant fats.
  • Cranberries. This sweet fruit offers a combination of pleasure and health benefits. Consuming cranberries, such as in your tea, can positively affect the ageing process. During menopause, they can help with hot flashes, and they can also help prevent diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. It's worth making them a part of your diet after you reach the age of 40!
