OpenAI unveils ChatGPT update with minimalist black dot interface
OpenAI announced a series of updates to its flagship conversational AI model, ChatGPT. These include a new app and interface. The main addition is a new user-directed system persona, taking the form of a vast black dot.

As reported by TechCrunch at the OpenAI Spring Event, the company's CTO, Mira Murati, noted that although models are becoming increasingly complex, the goal is to make interaction with them feel as natural and intuitive as possible. This is intended to allow users to focus solely on the conversation with AI, not the interface.
OpenAI opts for minimalism but with a richness of meaning
The new interface adopts a dot shape, which morphs into a stylized sound wave when ChatGPT speaks. This visualization is designed to enhance the notion of dialogue and collaboration. The decision against transforming the dot into a giant eye during video analysis functions was also wise. Instead, it shows users what it “sees” in real-time. The inspiration for such a design could be the minimalism that was once a hallmark of Apple. However, as TechCrunch notes, the dot also emerges as a new, neutral, and versatile brand that is easy to recognize and simple to expand with new features and meanings.
The new ChatGPT interface will be implemented in applications for computers and mobile devices, but it is not yet available in a browser version. OpenAI also announced the launch of an AI newsletter, with subscription availability starting from June 5.
What other novelties has OpenAI introduced to ChatGPT?
The black dot is not the only novelty that OpenAI has introduced to ChatGPT. It can also analyze sound, images, and text in real time. It responds to sound signals in about 250 milliseconds, giving a reaction time of approximately 300 milliseconds—comparable to a conversation with a human. The GPT-4o version is also designed to offer greater efficiency than GPT-4 in analyzing text in English and other languages.
Interestingly, GPT-4o has been made available for free. Plus, subscription users will enjoy up to five times increased message limits. OpenAI also plans to introduce a GPT-4o alpha version for users with a Plus subscription. According to announcements, it is expected to appear in the coming weeks.
