As a result of severe turbulence that occurred during Tuesday's flight from London to Singapore, one person died, and over 70 were injured. In a Bangkok hospital—in the intensive care unit—over 20 passengers remain hospitalized.

One person is dead, and many passengers were injured due to severe turbulence during a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777 flight from London to Singapore, the airline reported on Tuesday. The aircraft made an emergency landing in Bangkok.

The airline reported 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board.

Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital in the capital of Thailand is treating 22 patients with spine and spinal cord problems, six with skull and brain injuries, and another 13 for bone, muscle, and soft tissue issues, the hospital's director Adinun Kittiratanapaibool said to reporters on Thursday. He added that 17 passengers had to undergo surgery.

"Happy to be alive"

Passengers who recounted the events on board following the emergency landing in Bangkok said that some passengers and crew were thrown around the cabin, sustaining various—and often bloody—injuries as a result.

Josh Silverstone, one of the Singapore Airlines flight passengers, told CNN that when he left the hospital on Wednesday evening (GMT), he was "happy to be alive".

As a result of the incident, a 73-year-old British man died, and 143 other passengers and crew members of the flight arrived in Singapore on Wednesday morning (GMT) on a replacement aircraft sent by Singapore Airlines.
