Pruning oleander in the autumn is crucial if we want it to astonish us with its blooms during the spring and summer seasons. However, not everyone is aware of the numerous benefits this can provide us. Here, we offer suggestions on what to keep in mind.

Pruning oleander in the autumn - why is it so important?

Oleanders can be a splendid decoration for the garden. However, it is critical to know how to care for them properly. Not everyone knows that one essential aspect of their care includes pruning them in the autumn. By doing this, we remove old, damaged shoots and help them withstand winter weather conditions more effectively. Consequently, they can be somewhat strengthened.

We can also readily give the oleander the desired shape by trimming it. Interestingly, the cut shoots root easily, enabling us to cultivate another plant in the garden.

How to prune oleander? It's quite simple. Measure about 10-15 centimetres above where the side branches grow, and then use a well-sharpened pruner to cut off excess shoots.

Is oleander poisonous?

Oleander is a stunning plant that typically blooms from May to September. Unfortunately, not everyone realises that it is poisonous. Caution should be exercised with all its parts, from roots to flowers, as they contain toxic substances such as cardiac glycosides, which can cause serious health issues or even be fatal.

This plant is also extremely harmful to animals, so it is advisable not to grow it in areas where they can access it.
