Obama questions Biden's re‑election bid amidst growing Democrat concern

"President Biden's chances of winning have significantly decreased," Barack Obama stated in a conversation with his associates, reports The Washington Post. Thus, the former president joins the ranks of Democrats who doubt the current president's chances for re-election.

The newspaper reports that Obama "believes that the president should seriously consider the viability of his candidacy," citing people familiar with the matter. The former president reportedly said these words at a meeting with trusted associates.

Officially, after the TV debate organised by CNN, Obama talked to Biden only once. At the same time, as reported by "The Washington Post," the former president emphasises in official conversations that the decision to continue the candidacy should belong solely and exclusively to Biden. Obama continues to stress that "his concern is to protect Biden and his legacy," and "opposes the notion that only he can influence Biden's decision-making process."

The newspaper asked the former president's entourage for a comment. Obama's spokesperson declined.

Concern among Democrats is growing regarding Biden's further pursuit of the presidency. Last week, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer discussed the issue with the president, warning him about widespread concerns that his candidacy could harm the Democrats' chances of controlling one of the legislative bodies next year.

"Publicly, he remains cornered. But privately, he has come to terms with the growing pressure, weak polls, and unsustainable control that prevents him from continuing the campaign," sources for the portal, including prominent Democrats, claim.
