Within just 24 hours, NATO twice scrambled Italian fighters stationed in Malbork. The Italian News Agency (AGI) reported that Russian IL-20 aircraft were intercepted by allied air forces over the Baltic Sea.

The AGI shared news of the Russian IL-20 aircraft's attempt to enter NATO airspace. The alert was raised by NATO's Air Operations Control and Command Centre, which is located in the German town of Uedem. Italian Eurofighter (Typhoon) jets were scrambled from the base in Malbork in the morning hours of 28 and 29 March.

The Italian aircraft identified and then intercepted Russian spy planes flying over the international waters of the Baltic Sea. Business Insider Poland provided information that the Russian aircraft "had no hostile intentions".

Thanks to these aircraft, it is possible to ensure the launch and interception of any suspicious track detected by radar within a few minutes, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year — the statement issued by the Italian Air Force reads.

The Italian aircraft, part of the TFA, operate within the NATO Enhanced Air Policing mission. The Italian contingent is under the leadership of the Joint Force Operations Command. It includes not just pilots but also technical and logistical personnel.

Polish services on alert

On Friday morning, the Polish Operational Command issued a statement regarding the activities of Polish and allied aircraft in Polish airspace. This was due to an increase in Russian long-range aviation and further missile attacks on Ukraine.

This marked another night of heightened alertness for Polish and allied systems and intensive duty for Polish Army soldiers who continuously monitor the situation in Ukraine and remain highly vigilant to ensure the security of Polish airspace — the statement of the Polish military reads.

After the activity of Russian long-range aviation decreased, Polish and allied forces "operating in Polish airspace have concluded" their tasks and resumed "standard operational activity".
