"Navy personnel seized 8,361 kilograms of illicit cargo, which represents the largest amount of drugs seized in a maritime operation, unprecedented in history," stated the Mexican Navy fleet in a release on Friday.
The seizure took place in the Pacific Ocean, southwest of the city of Lazaro Cardenas, located in the state of Michoacan on the western coast of Mexico. Twenty-three people were arrested in the operation.
The statement did not specify which exact drugs were seized or where they originated from.
The AFP agency recalled that the most significant drug seizure in Mexico occurred in November 2007, when 23,000 kilograms of Colombian cocaine were confiscated.
