The spokesman emphasised that these talks represent another step in the "possibilities of peace," aimed at a ceasefire and achieving peace in Ukraine.
No details were provided about the course of the meeting. The Hungarian Embassy in Washington refused to comment on the matter.
In a conversation with Reuters, Peter Szijjarto, Hungary's foreign minister, expressed his belief that Trump’s victory in the upcoming US presidential elections could increase the chances of peace in Ukraine. Szijjarto added that Orban wants to initiate direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
Reuters says that Orban, known for supporting Trump, previously visited Kyiv, Moscow, and Beijing unexpectedly. These were not well received, either in the European Union or NATO. The visit to Moscow was particularly criticised, as Orban had no mandate to represent the EU or NATO. Many critics accused him of legitimising Putin's actions.
