A historic step
During a joint press conference with the Ukrainian president, which took place on a Friday in Berlin, the Chancellor announced a new arms package valued at around £920 million. The package includes, among other items, 36 howitzers, 120,000 pieces of artillery ammunition, two additional IRIS-T anti-air systems and corresponding missiles - reported Scholz.
- The security agreement between the two countries represents a significant step forward. It also affirms that Germany will continue to support an independent Ukraine in its defence against Russian military aggression for as long as is necessary - the chancellor confirmed. He also said, "Ukrainian partners will receive aid in building modern armed forces that will deter any future attacks".
- What's crucial is that Putin hasn't achieved any of his targets. The resilience of the Ukrainian nation is admirable - added Scholz, remarking that Ukrainian armed forces have managed to liberate more than half of the territories occupied by Russian troops.
The Chancellor also highlighted that relations between Germany and Ukraine "have reached a completely new level" in the last two years. Germany has provided Ukraine with nearly £5.94 billion in military support, with an additional £5 billion pledged for the upcoming years.
Navalny's death
The timing of Zelenskyy's visit to Berlin coincided with the announcement of Alexei Nawalny's death in a Russian prison colony.
- As soon as I was informed that Alexei Navalny passed away in a Russian prison, it became clear: he was murdered by Putin, just like the thousands of other victims who have been tortured and persecuted by this monster - Zelenskyy stated during a press conference in Berlin, alongside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Despite being active on social media, Medvedev did not comment at all on the matter of the Russian oppositionist's death.
