Mangosteen, an exotic fruit, is gaining popularity due to its unique health benefits. Although still not widely known in the UK, it has been valued in Asia for centuries as a "gift from the heavens." Its rich composition and wide range of health benefits make mangosteen increasingly appreciated by health-conscious individuals. Mangosteen fruits boost immunity, combat cancer, and slow the ageing process. For these reasons, it is worthwhile to include it in your diet to enjoy its numerous advantages.

Where does the mangosteen come from?

Originating from Borneo, the mangosteen is an evergreen tree with fruits characterised by a thick, dark purple rind and juicy white flesh. The taste of mangosteen is difficult to describe—combining hints of pineapple, apricot, orange, and sweet gooseberry. Due to its health properties, mangosteen is cultivated in many parts of the world, including Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Australia, and South America.

Mangosteen – a health treasure

What makes mangosteen so special is its abundance of nutrients and bioactive compounds. The most important are xanthones – substances with strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. Xanthones neutralise harmful free radicals that contribute to ageing and the development of many diseases, including cancer.

Health benefits of mangosteen:

  • Boosts immunity: Thanks to its vitamin C and other antioxidants, mangosteen effectively strengthens the immune system, protecting the body against infections.
  • Fights chronic diseases: Scientific studies have shown that mangosteen may help treat and prevent many chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and some types of cancer.
  • Delays ageing processes: Mangosteen's strong antioxidant action helps fight free radicals, which are the main culprits of premature ageing of the skin and the whole body.
  • Reduces inflammation: The xanthones in mangosteen exhibit strong anti-inflammatory effects, which can be helpful in inflammation-related conditions, such as joint or gastrointestinal diseases.

How to eat mangosteen?

Mangosteen is best eaten fresh. It can also be added to fruit salads, cocktails, or smoothies and used to make juices, jams, and preserves. However, it should be noted that mangosteen is a seasonal fruit and may be difficult to find in our climate conditions.

Mangosteen is a fruit with exceptional health properties. Thanks to its wealth of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, it can support the immune system, slow ageing processes, and help prevent many diseases. Although it may be slightly more expensive than other fruits, it is worth including in your diet to enjoy its health benefits.
