Where does mamoncillo come from?
This fruit naturally grows in the Caribbean and the northern regions of South America. Mamoncillo is available chiefly in the summer, from July to October, and is known by various names, such as guinep, genip, or limoncillo. Another well-known name is mamon.
Mamoncillo fruits grow on small trees in oblong clusters. Interestingly, in appearance, they closely resemble the popular lime. However, they are somewhat smaller, with a diameter of about 3-5 centimetres.
The variety of flavours distinguishes mamoncillo and makes it so popular. Its unique mix of sour and sweet notes recalls the tastes of lychee and lime. This fruit contains vitamins A and C, fibre, and minerals such as phosphorus and calcium.
