Macron hails fall of Assad, vows continued Middle East support
Emmanuel Macron spoke out following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. The French president did not hide his satisfaction in his post on X.
The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, commenting on the events in Syria, stated on Sunday that "the barbaric state has fallen" and assured that his country will continue to engage "for the safety of everyone in the Middle East."
In a comment on the X service, the French president added that he "pays tribute to the Syrian people, their courage, and patience."
Syrian rebels announced on Sunday in a televised statement the liberation of Damascus and the overthrow of President al-Assad after his 24-year reign.
The Prime Minister of Syria, Muhammad Gazi al-Jalali, stated that since Saturday evening, the whereabouts of al-Assad and Defence Minister Ali Mahmud Abbas are unknown. Al-Assad, who crushed all signs of opposition and imprisoned thousands of people, flew from Damascus on Sunday in an unknown direction. According to Reuters reports, the ousted President of Syria may have died in a plane crash.
