Lucid Air Sapphire zooms past Tesla to claim acceleration crown
Until now, the Tesla Model S Plaid version has led the pack in acceleration prowess. However, the Lucid Air Sapphire has clocked better results in the quarter-mile race, dethroning Tesla's record.

The evolution of electric vehicles is truly impressive. They are breaking new ground not just with lower energy consumption and longer ranges but also with their design and, most notably, their performance. The quickest electric cars outperform supercar legends like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Bugatti. Despite being heavier, which affects their handling, they are in a league of their own when it comes to acceleration.
The Tesla Model S Plaid version was the undisputed champion in this segment until the Lucid Air Sapphire came along and showed it could go even faster, earning the nickname "rocket".
Lucid Air Sapphire outpaces Tesla on the track
Performance metrics have always captivated enthusiasts, clearly indicating which model stands superior. The acceleration gap between the two models is narrow yet significant. Both are exceedingly swift, but the Lucid Air Sapphire has snatched the crown for the best acceleration from Tesla, hitting the first 60 mph during the quarter-mile sprint.
The Tesla Model S Plaid, the American automaker's fastest variant, completes the quarter-mile in 9.258 seconds. Lucid Air Sapphire shaves this down to under 9 seconds, with recorded times of 8.94 and 8.92 seconds on two tries. This is even faster than some upgraded Tesla Model S units. The Lucid Air Sapphire was meticulously prepared for its runs, with tyre warming and battery pre-conditioning.
Comparatively, the Lucid Air Sapphire rockets from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.92 seconds, slightly edging out the Tesla Model S Plaid, which, with 1020 HP, accomplishes this speed in around 1.99 seconds.
Exploring the Lucid Air Sapphire's capabilities
The Lucid Air Sapphire stands out with its staggering 1,234 horsepower. The manufacturer suggests it can sprint to 60 mph even quicker than test results have shown – in 1.89 seconds. It also boasts a remarkable range, topping 500 miles. Utilising a rapid charger, it can recover about 200 miles of range in approximately 12 minutes.
Though not classified as a super sports car based on its appearance, the Lucid Air Sapphire doesn't skimp on luxury. It offers four doors and a sizable boot. Among its premium features are ventilated and heated front seats with massage functionality.
It is available in four models: Pure (RWD), Touring (AWD), Grand Touring (AWD), and Sapphire (AWD), with power outputs of 430, 620, 819, and 1,234 HP, respectively. Their prices start from $69,000, $77,000, $109,900, and $249,000. The acceleration time from 0 to 60 mph for these models is 4.5, 3.4, 3, and under 1.9 seconds, respectively.
A direct showdown on the track?
The Drag Times team, responsible for the Lucid Air Sapphire's speed measurements, also shares similar tests via videos on YouTube. They've hinted at organising a direct competition between the two electric giants. Such an event would allow onlookers to directly compare which model truly reigns supreme under identical conditions, such as wind force and direction or track surface, determining the ultimate acceleration king.
