Lithuania boosts energy security with military support

The Lithuanian government has decided to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure. Starting in January, it will be guarded by the Lithuanian Public Security Service. The military may also be utilised for this purpose. Until now, the protection was managed by a private company.

The enhanced protection will encompass, among others, the Poland-Lithuania energy bridge LitPol Link in Alytus, the NordBalt infrastructure in Klaipeda, the Litgrid data centre in Vilnius, and the power plant in Elektrenai.

"After synchronisation with the continental European power grid (at the beginning of February 2025 - ed.), these facilities will be crucial for the continued reliable operation of the Lithuanian power system," conveyed the Lithuanian government in a statement.

The Lithuanian government is also considering deploying the military to protect the liquefied natural gas terminals, oil product terminals in Klaipeda, and the Orlen Lietuva refinery.

Change in Lithuania. The military will protect important facilities

The protection of energy infrastructure became a priority after Russia began its war in Ukraine in 2022 and following incidents in the Baltic Sea that resulted in damage to underwater cables.

The government in Vilnius emphasizes that energy security is crucial for the country’s stability.
