Judith Godrèche's silent protest sends powerful message at cannes
Judith Godrèche is one of the prominent faces of the #MeToo movement in France. During the première on Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival, the actress made a significant gesture on the red carpet.
On Tuesday, the latest edition of the Cannes Film Festival officially began. That day, the opening ceremony was held in the French cinema capital, where the Honorary Golden Palm was awarded. The lifetime achievement award went to Meryl Streep, who, upon accepting the accolade, also heard a touching speech from Juliette Binoche.
On Wednesday in Cannes, there was a screening of one of the productions not competing for the Golden Palm. The film in question is "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." The première of George Miller's work attracted many well-known faces - on the red carpet were, among others, Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays the lead role, and Naomi Campbell, who chose a 30-year-old Chanel dress for the occasion.
A significant gesture on the red carpet in Cannes. The French star opposes sexual violence
Among the guests at the Wednesday première was the well-known French actress, Judith Godrèche. The star is promoting her short film "Moi Aussi" at this year's festival, which tells the stories of sexual violence victims. The actress attended the "Mad Max" universe screening with the film's cast that she directed.
According to AP, Godrèche dedicated her work to "all those who one day finally have been able to tell their story," as well as those who "still live in silence." During the walk up the famous stairs, Godrèche and her team made a significant gesture that referred to the film's theme, "Moi Aussi." The French star and her companions covered their mouths with their hands.
The title of Judith Godrèche's short film can be translated to English as "Me Too." In France, actresses are considered one of the faces of the movement that opposes harassment against women. As AP reminds, Godrèche was one of the first stars to stand against Harvey Weinstein publicly. In 2017, the actress shared her experiences with the producer in an interview with the New York Times. She revealed that in 1996, during her stay in Cannes, Weinstein invited her to breakfast to discuss a film featuring her, which his studio had previously bought. At some point, the producer suggested the conversation continue in his hotel room.
As reported by the New York Times, Godrèche said that Weinstein wanted to give her a massage, claiming it was an American custom. The actress refused, but the man persisted - he started to touch her and remove her jumper.
In February of this year, Judith Godrèche accused the well-known French director Benoît Jacquot of "rape with violence." The actress also accused director Jacques Doillon of rape. In February 2024, Godrèche made a strong appeal during the Césars, calling on the French film industry to face the truth about sexual violence.
