The Jeju Air plane crash at Muan airport has become the most tragic air accident in South Korea in thirty years. A total of 167 people lost their lives. Distressing footage of the disaster has appeared online.
At Muan airport in South Korea, a Jeju Air plane crash occurred, which, according to the South Korean Ministry of Transport, is the most tragic air accident in the country in almost thirty years. There were 181 people on board, including two from Thailand, while the rest were South Korean citizens. The death toll was 151. The incident was reported by Reuters news agency.
Lee Jung-hyun, the head of Muan fire department, stated that various possible causes of the crash are being investigated, including birds and weather conditions. According to the Yonhap news agency, it is suspected that a collision with a bird caused the landing gear to malfunction. There were also reports that one of the passengers informed a relative about a bird getting stuck in the wing of the plane.
Dramatic footage of the crash
YTN television broadcast footage showing the Jeju Air plane skidding at high speed down the runway and crashing into a concrete wall, most likely with the landing gear retracted. Other local stations showed thick, black smoke emanating from the burning plane.
