In 2019, Japan was visited by 31.88 million tourists. In July of that same year, a monthly record of over 2.9 million tourists was set. Now, Japan is setting new records in the tourism sector. In March of this year, the country was visited by over 3.08 million tourists.
The government agency reported that foreign travelers spent 1.75 trillion yen in the country from January to March this year, roughly 11 million pounds. This is the highest quarterly value in history and is also related to the weak yen exchange rate.
For comparison, in 2023, visitors to the Japanese islands spent 5.3 trillion yen (over 34 million pounds), which is a record sum.
Most tourists come from South Korea and Taiwan
As reported by the Japanese tourism organization, in 2023, the largest number of tourists visiting the country (over 663,000 people) came from South Korea, representing an increase of 13.2 percent compared to the level before the pandemic in 2019. The next group is travelers from Taiwan (about 484,400 people), whose number increased by 20.4 percent.
Due to Easter, the number of tourists from the United States (by approximately 64 percent) and the Philippines (about 63 percent) also increased compared to 2019. The Japanese government is working on developing the tourism industry to attract 60 million foreign tourists to the islands by 2030.
