The number of metropolitan areas in Italy under close observation due to extreme temperatures is increasing. On Monday, a red alert was in effect in 17 cities; on Tuesday, it will be 19, and on Wednesday, a record 22.

These regions will be struggling not only with the heat but also with the fires that are emerging.

The Ministry of Health in Italy has raised the alert to the highest possible level, warning all residents without exception – not limiting it only to risk groups such as the elderly, people with chronic diseases, or children. On Monday, the alert was issued for Rome, Bologna, Genoa, and Florence, and subsequently, the list will include Naples, Milan, and Venice.

Forecasts are alarming as they indicate temperatures exceeding 104 degrees Fahrenheit in various parts of the country. It is expected to be particularly hot on Wednesday, when a red alert will be in effect in 22 out of 27 cities.

The intensity of the current heatwave is also evidenced by a record set over the weekend in Mont Blanc. The meteorological station recorded temperatures above freezing for 33 hours at 15,584 feet above sea level.

A major fire also broke out in the city of Terracina in the Lazio region. About 50 residents of nearby homes were evacuated. A fire alarm is ongoing near Salerno in the south, where flames have appeared in several places.
