We reported the horrendously high temperatures in Italian cities a few days ago. Over the past weekend (12th-13th July), the highest alert level due to the heat was in effect in 11 of them. Now, the situation is even worse.

Hot as hell

The third level of weather alert was announced on Tuesday, 16th July, for 12 Italian cities - Rome, Ancona, Bologna, Campobasso, Florence, Frosinone, Latina, Perugia, Pescara, Rieti, Trieste, and Viterbo. Five of these cities are in the capital region of Lazio, where the state of emergency is in effect in all provinces. Temperatures in these areas may exceed even 40°C.

On Wednesday, 17th July, 13 Italian cities will be under the highest alert. Palermo will join this group.

Dangerous heat waves

In recent days, the number of people going to the emergency room due to fainting and other health problems related to the sweltering heat has increased. Compared to the average period, we even have about 20-25% more patients, reported the Italian Association of Hospital Doctors.

It is important to remember that the risk of heart attack significantly increases during such heat waves. If we have to go outside, we should prepare accordingly, remembering to wear breathable clothing, high-SPF sunscreen, and a hat, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol and heavy physical exertion, and eat easily digestible meals. Additionally, during heatwaves, we must remember about animals. Providing them with plenty of water and a shady place is essential.

The severe heat is expected to last in Italy until the end of July.
