Israel and Hamas reach ceasefire after 15‑month conflict
Reuters reported that Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire agreement to end the 15-month-long conflict in the Gaza Strip. Thousands of Palestinians took to the streets, with many celebrating joyfully. Palestinian flags are prominently displayed.
On Wednesday evening, hundreds of photos and videos from the Gaza Strip surfaced online. Many faces were awash with tears and disbelief, with some individuals shouting in Arabic, "Allah Akbar" (God is almighty).
Some Palestinian posts claim that "Hamas won the war against Israel," although the agreement does not specify a victorious party.
Published videos depict many young men and even children.
Ceasefire: Agreement on the Gaza Strip
An individual knowledgeable about the peace talks in Qatar reported that Israel and Hamas have agreed to halt hostilities in the Gaza Strip and to exchange Israeli captives for Palestinian detainees.
CNN also confirms the information. Hamas has approved the agreement and sent its response to the mediators, a high-ranking Hamas official, Basem Naim, told the station.
The ceasefire agreement clears the path towards peace, concluding the war that began in October 2022.
The lengthy negotiations were conducted by Egyptian and Qatari mediators, with support from the United States. Steve Witkoff, Donald Trump's Middle East envoy, participated in these discussions, collaborating with President Joe Biden's team to advance the agreement, Reuters reports.
End of negotiations on the Gaza Strip
Israeli forces invaded the Gaza Strip following a Hamas militant attack on 7 October 2022. The surprise attack resulted in 1,200 Israeli soldiers and civilians losing their lives. Hamas forces kidnapped over 250 foreign and Israeli hostages.
Due to Israel's strikes on the Gaza Strip, more than 46,000 people were killed, according to figures from Gaza's health ministry. The Gaza Strip itself suffered extensive destruction.
President-elect Donald Trump has commented on the agreement. "I am thrilled American and Israeli hostages will be returning home to be reunited with their families and loved ones," he stated on social media.
