Galešnjak, an uninhabited island without any tourist facilities or buildings, is one of the world's rare locations where construction is strictly prohibited. This distinctive spot, attracting sailors from around the globe, has been compromised by illicit actions.
The initial evidence of construction was spotted by sailors navigating through the Pašman Channel who observed changes on the islet. "This place, a favourite anchorage for sailors in the summer due to its completely wild and beautiful coast, has been tarnished this year. Someone had the audacity to begin constructing a pier, throwing plastic bags filled with loose material into the sea, forming a structure that bears resemblance to a dock foundation," according to Croatian media.
Published photos further reveal metal spikes, likely used as construction materials to stabilize the shore. These images underline the extent of the illegal activities undertaken by the offenders.
A unique place with olive groves
The island of Galešnjak is one of the planet's rare natural landmarks that boasts a heart shape. Spanning roughly 32 acres, with its shoreline extending close to 1.5 km, it is home to small olive groves owned by several plot holders. Its unparalleled beauty and essence have been tarnished by unlawful deeds.
