Hungary's Orban predicts Trump will pull US from Ukraine conflict

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated on Friday on Kossuth Radio that under Donald Trump’s presidency, the United States will withdraw from the conflict in Ukraine, and Europe is not capable of financing it alone.

- This conflict is a hot potato. There is a military defeat at the front, and the Americans will withdraw from this conflict. The EU will not finance this conflict alone, he said.

Orban: Europe cannot finance the conflict in Ukraine

According to him, two years after the outbreak of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, it has brought enormous harm to the European Union and Hungary.

- If Trump had won in 2020 (U.S. presidential elections - editor’s note), there would not have been these dreadful two years, because there would not have been a conflict. We are paying a huge price for it now, he declared.

Orban's government has long openly supported Trump in the presidential elections, and he repeatedly praised him during public appearances. On Wednesday, Orban announced that he had already spoken on the phone with the winner of the U.S. presidential election and had "big plans for the future" with him.

After Hungary took over the six-month presidency of the EU Council at the beginning of July, the Hungarian prime minister commenced a so-called peace mission. During this mission, he travelled, among other places, to Moscow to meet with Vladimir Putin, for which he was sharply criticised by EU partners.

Does Trump already have a plan for Ukraine?

Sources at "The Wall Street Journal" report that the U.S. President-elect, Donald Trump, is considering offering Ukraine the possibility of freezing the armed conflict with Russia. The condition would be to keep the current borders without returning lost territories and to refrain from joining NATO for at least twenty years.

As suggested by Trump's advisers, the plan to end the conflict is under discussion. It is assumed that military actions on the front line will be halted, and a demilitarised zone will be established along it. However, who would be responsible for its security has not yet been determined. The WSJ source simultaneously ruled out the participation of American troops or a UN contingent in this mission.

In exchange for the refusal to join NATO, Trump is willing to continue supplying weapons to Ukraine.
