According to dietitians, it's best not to sweeten coffee or tea. It's a good way to limit sugar in the diet, but not everyone feels the same. Many of us still can't imagine these drinks "unsweetened."

If it has to be sweet..

How to sweeten coffee? The answer once seemed straightforward: sugar. Today, there are many more possibilities. Sweeteners and sugar substitutes, often considered healthier, have emerged. Syrups suitable for sweetening, such as maple or acacia, are also available. However, one of the most natural and seemingly healthiest options is honey. But is that really true?

Coffee benefits

You have probably read more than once about how healthy coffee is. There's no need to discuss honey extensively since it's considered one of the most nutritious products in the world. But how do they work together? Unlike sugar and artificial sweeteners, which have practically no nutritional value, honey contains vitamins, minerals, and other compounds that positively affect health. Honey also helps strengthen the immune system. Thanks to this, coffee has become a more valuable drink.

Not every day

Coffee with honey does have some nutritional value, but the benefits aren't substantial enough to drink it without limits. Despite its valuable ingredients, honey contains a lot of sugar. Adding two teaspoons of honey to your coffee equates to about 168 kilojoules and 12 grams of sugar, so if you drink several cups of this beverage a day, your sugar intake increases. Therefore, it's better to use honey in coffee occasionally.

Treat it like a dessert

Coffee with honey can be treated as a dessert. Mild honeys, such as linden or floral, particularly complement black coffee. Flavoured honeys work well with strong espresso. An intense shot of espresso with a small addition of gingerbread honey or cardamom tastes excellent.
