The smell of flatbreads baked in a tile stove is one of my earliest childhood memories. When my grandmother noticed that bread was running low, she quickly prepared this fluffy inside, crispy outside pancakes. The whole family gathered around the table, enjoying the taste of freshly baked flatbreads. My mother passed down the recipe for these wonderful flatbreads from our great-grandmother.

Although today flatbreads are mainly associated with being a snack, for our ancestors, it was a staple food. Its preparation was simple, and the ingredients were easily accessible—flour, water, and salt. These three ingredients create a unique taste and aroma that take us back in time.

Recipe for homemade flatbreads

Ingredients:

  • 10.5 oz wheat flour
  • 8.5 fl oz warm water
  • a pinch of salt

Preparation method:

  1. Mixing the ingredients: Sift the flour into a bowl and mix the warm water with the salt. Then, combine the dry and wet ingredients, kneading the dough to achieve a smooth consistency.
  2. Dough resting: Cover the prepared dough with cling film and set aside 30 minutes to rest.
  3. Forming the flatbreads: Divide the dough into smaller parts and roll each one into a thin pancake.
  4. Frying: Heat a dry pan and fry the flatbreads on both sides until golden brown.

The ready flatbreads are delicious on their own, but you can serve them with various toppings:

  • Classic: Butter – a simple yet incredibly tasty combination.
