Upholstered furniture is a central feature in many of our homes. These are the pieces we use daily to relax or spend time with family and friends. Unfortunately, frequent use can cause the upholstery to become dirty quickly.
Regular cleaning of upholstery is important not just for aesthetic reasons, but also for hygiene. Dirt and dust mites can lead to allergies and health issues. Therefore, it's worth considering appropriate methods for stain removal.
How to clean upholstered furniture?
One of the most popular and effective home cleaning methods for upholstery involves using baking soda and lemon juice. Baking soda has stain-removing and deodorising properties, making it an ideal agent for most stains. Lemon juice, on the other hand, has antibacterial and refreshing properties, which enhance the cleaning effectiveness. To prepare the solution:
- Mix 2 teaspoons of baking soda with the juice squeezed from one lemon in 0.5 gallons of lukewarm water.
- Immerse a soft cloth in the solution and wring it out well so that it is slightly damp.
- Gently wipe stains and dirt with circular motions.
- After cleaning, leave the upholstery to dry.
To remove stains, toothpaste can also be effective. It is particularly useful if it has a white and non-gel consistency. Simply apply the toothpaste to a soft, clean cloth and gently rub it into the surface of the furniture.
Another method for removing stains from upholstery is using shaving foam. Traditional white foam, without additional dyes and fragrances, works best. Avoid foam with added oils or other moisturising substances, as they can leave greasy marks.
Before applying the foam to the stain, the surface should be pre-cleaned of dust. Simply apply the foam directly onto the stain, gently rub it into the fabric, and leave it for a few minutes. The foam penetrates stains effectively, dissolving them and easing removal. After applying the foam, use a soft brush or cloth to gently rub it in. Then wipe the area with a damp cloth to remove foam residues and dissolved dirt. For more persistent stains, such as ink or greasy marks, the process may need to be repeated.
When is it worth using cleaning agents?
Although home cleaning methods for upholstery can be effective, sometimes it's worth considering specialist agents, especially for stubborn stains. Commercial products are usually more concentrated and work faster, which can be crucial in emergencies. These agents often contain antibacterial ingredients that not only remove stains but also eliminate bacteria and dust mites.
Remember that...
Before applying either homemade or purchased products, it's advisable to test their effect on an inconspicuous area of the upholstery.
