While you were sleeping, here's what global agencies reported overnight from Monday to Tuesday.

  • During an anti-government protest organised on Monday, the parliament building in Albania's capital was pelted with Molotov cocktails. The police used tear gas against the protesters and reported injuries among ten officers, according to local media. The protesters demanded the release of Sali Berisha, a former president and prime minister as well as the leader of the Democratic Party of Albania, from house arrest. The politician was detained in connection with an investigation into alleged corruption.
  • Israel and Lebanon are once again in conflict. Hezbollah, a Shiite organisation from Lebanon, launched approximately 190 rockets towards Israel on Monday. As a result of the attack, at least twelve people were injured, including in Haifa. Israel responded with airstrikes on key Hezbollah targets in Beirut and southern Lebanon, according to the Israeli military.
  • In Mexico, the brutal violence associated with drug cartels continues. Alejandro Arcos, the mayor of the capital of the Guerrero state in the south of the country - Chilpancingo, was murdered six days after taking office, media reported on Monday. The body of the mayor of the city, with a population of around 280,000, was found on Sunday in the passenger seat of a car, and his severed head was placed on the roof of the vehicle, according to the Spanish-speaking BBC station.
  • After 167 days of drought in the Brazilian Federal District, the National Meteorological Institute INMET issued a long-awaited statement on Monday evening local time: "The end of the historic drought: on Monday, we finally had rain!"
