Ukrainians have released a recording showcasing the Skynex system. Although two batteries of this anti-aircraft system reached the front lines some time ago, the Ukrainians had not publicised them until now. What distinguishes the Skynex, and what capabilities does it provide?

"We are grateful to our allies for helping to increase Ukraine's air defence capabilities. More air defence systems for Ukraine = more innocent lives saved," wrote the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence in a brief statement regarding Skynex.

Analysts view Skynex as a significant reinforcement for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, for whom combating Russian drones has become routine. Skynex is a weapon dedicated primarily to countering such threats, although it can also be used to shoot down cruise missiles or aircraft. Its effective range is estimated to be around 2.5 miles.

In the recording presented by the Ukrainians, several key elements of this German system are highlighted. It features the Oerlikon Revolver Gun Mk3 with a high rate of fire of up to 1,000 rounds per minute, which handles both anti-tank and programmable AHEAD ammunition. It also boasts an automatic target-tracking option and an X-TAR3D radar.

The complete turret of the Skynex system weighs just over 5 tons (with a stock of 252 rounds of ammunition). It is clear that the Ukrainians are testing Skynex in a stationary version dedicated to protecting specific facilities. In a mobile version, it would need to be mounted on an appropriate armoured transporter chassis.

Germany is one of the countries that most frequently responds to Ukrainian appeals for air defence systems. As part of their support, Berlin has managed to deliver not only Skynex systems to the front lines but also Gepard systems (also primarily used to counter Russian drones) and the most advanced anti-aircraft systems like IRIS-T or Patriot.
