German chancellor's future in doubt as CDU/CSU leads polls
The elections for the German Bundestag are scheduled for 23 February 2025. According to Bild, Olaf Scholz has increasingly lower chances of retaining his position. Polls indicate an advantage for the CDU/CSU over the SPD, which puts the future of the chancellor in question.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz from the SPD faces a difficult challenge. Polls show that the CDU/CSU, with candidate Friedrich Merz, has a significant lead over the Social Democrats.
As reported by Bild, two months before the elections, CDU/CSU enjoys support at the level of 31–33 per cent, while SPD has only 14–16 per cent. This represents a difference of 15 to 19 percentage points.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz in a difficult situation. He will not retain his position
In 2021, the situation was more balanced, which allowed Scholz to win. However, this time, according to Hermann Binkert from the Insa institute, making up this difference seems unlikely.
The President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, dissolved the Bundestag and called for early elections. This decision was a response to a vote of no confidence in Scholz's government.
Steinmeier emphasised that in these difficult times, Germany needs a stable government with a credible majority in parliament. This poses additional challenges for Scholz in the upcoming campaign.
