Geranium, a well-known plant for years, is once again capturing the interest of houseplant lovers. Its unique citrus-rose fragrance made it not just a decorative addition but also practical, filling homes with a pleasant aroma. What properties does geranium possess, and for what purposes can it be utilised?

The healing properties of geranium are not confined to earache relief, a common belief of the past. The leaves of this plant are rich in essential oils that exhibit antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Because of these properties, geranium was used to combat upper respiratory tract ailments, such as colds or throat infections.

Geranium has been used as an infusion or a direct compress on aching areas. It provides pain relief and aids in treating skin issues like acne or allergies. Interestingly, our grandmothers valued its insect-repelling properties, making it sound indoors and in the garden.

How to cultivate geranium?

Geranium is an exceptionally easy plant to cultivate. It prefers a warm and sunny location and thrives best on a south-facing windowsill, where it can benefit from ample sunlight. Although the plant tolerates sunlight well, it dislikes draughts and sudden temperature changes, which should be considered when choosing its location.

The plant favours moderate humidity, so it's advisable to avoid overwatering. Excessive watering can lead to root rot, so it is better to water only when the top layer of soil is slightly dry. During winter, watering can be reduced to a minimum when the plant's growth slows. Its stems should also be trimmed, promoting branching and more vigorous growth.

How to prepare geranium for ailments?

One of the simplest ways to benefit from geranium is to prepare an infusion. Pour a glass of hot water over a handful of fresh or dried leaves, then cover and leave it for about 10 minutes. This infusion can be used for drinking, gargling, or skin cleansing. Regular consumption of geranium infusion not only supports the immune system but also alleviates symptoms of colds and catarrh. The infusion can also be used for mouth rinsing to combat bacteria and bad breath.

Geranium is also excellent for inhalation. The essential oils released during inhalation help to clear the airways and ease infection symptoms. To prepare for inhalation, add a few drops of geranium oil to a bowl of hot water, then inhale the vapours for about 10 minutes, covering your head with a towel. This simple method can also relieve headaches and sinus pain.

When should geranium not be used?

Although geranium is a natural remedy, it's not suitable for everyone. Some people may be allergic to the essential oils in the plant, so it's recommended to conduct an allergy test before regular use. Apply oil to the forearm and observe the skin's reaction for 24 hours. If redness or itching occurs, avoiding contact with the plant is best.

Additionally, people with skin allergies should be cautious when directly contacting geranium leaves. It is always wise to consult a doctor before incorporating geranium into your regular routine.
