The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs launched an investigation after finding 12 bodies in an Indian restaurant at the mountainous resort of Gudauri, according to a statement released on Saturday.

Police found the bodies of 11 foreigners and one Georgian citizen in a locked bedroom on the second floor of the building where the Indian restaurant is located. The deceased were most likely employees of the resort.

Tragic accident in the ski resort

According to the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs, a generator was placed in a closed room near the bedroom. The employees likely started it on Friday, 13th December, after a power outage in the facility.

The Ministry reported that "at first glance," there were "no signs of violence" on the bodies.

The ministry reported that investigative activities are in full swing, with experts and criminologists examining the scene, conducting interviews with those connected to the case, and ordering the necessary examinations.

An ordered autopsy will clarify the cause of death for the 12 people. The proceedings are being conducted for involuntary manslaughter, which, according to the Georgian Penal Code, carries a penalty of 3 to 5 years of imprisonment in the event of the death of more than two people.
