History is not devoid of dictators who tried to present themselves as fathers of the nation. Tsars and 20th-century leaders took this approach, and now Kim Jong Un. The latter, in particular, faces a challenging task, as his father, for example, has enjoyed a significantly larger cult following so far.
It's no wonder that the young dictator continuously tries to strengthen his position and legend among the people. A perfect illustration of this is the music video for "Friendly Father," which was broadcast in recent days. In it, Kim Jong Un appears alongside soldiers and a joyful crowd, accompanied by music praising him as an excellent leader.
Kim Jong Un tries to shift the cult of his father onto himself
The mere existence of a song honouring the dictator does not generate much excitement. However, analysts highlight the significance of the video's release date. It coincided with a time when the rhetoric of local propaganda had shifted regarding the holiday on April 15th, dedicated to the birthday of Kim Il Sung, considered the founder of North Korea.
Until now, this distinctive date has been known as "Day of the Sun." This year, however, it has opted for a more "neutral" name: "the April holiday." According to Reuters agency analysts, this may be a subtle indication that Kim Jong Un is trying to strengthen his position.
This means that the Korean dictator wants to break away from the image of the son of the great Kim Il Sung, in favour of his own cult. However, this will be extremely difficult since his predecessor is seen by many citizens of North Korea not only as a hero but also as a deity. Nevertheless, as demonstrated by Monday's ceremony for constructing 10,000 new homes, Kim Jong Un has no intention of giving up.
