Greek authorities reported on Saturday evening that the fire north of Athens is less tense now, but the fight against the blaze is still ongoing. About 200 firefighters, supported by firefighting planes, are still working on-site. These efforts are hampered by strong winds, which in gusts reach speeds exceeding 100 km/h - the Reuters agency provided such information.
Fortunately, the fire does not pose a threat to residential buildings. A visible cloud of smoke was rising above the city surrounded by mountains.
The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection reported that over the weekend, half of Greece's territory was in a high-risk fire zone. This means there was a high probability of fires breaking out, forcing authorities to take additional precautionary measures.
