Foods to avoid for better sleep: Expert's nighttime advice
Do you feel the urge to eat something shortly before going to bed? A sleep expert advises on what to avoid if you're keen on getting a good night's sleep.
If we head to bed late, we sometimes need to have a late meal. However, there are specific foods you should avoid if you want to feel well and fall asleep quickly. An expert has shared her view on the subject, providing comments for an English-language portal.
What not to eat before going to bed?
Rosey Davidson, a sleep expert, explained in an interview with mirror.co.uk why some foods can cause sleep problems or make you wake up after a few hours. What should you keep in mind?
"Eating spicy food close to going to bed can cause acid reflux, which can trigger the brain to wake up excessively (...). High fat, high sugar and high caffeine in chocolate ice cream is a triple whammy in terms of disrupting sleep. The high sugar content can cause fluctuations in your blood sugar, cause stomach issues and keep you alert at bedtime, preventing you from relaxing and falling asleep," explained the expert in an interview with mirror.co.uk.
Diet for healthy sleep
Besides the foods you should avoid, there are those that can help prepare your body for sleep. Rosey Davidson recommends including items that contain tryptophan, melatonin, and magnesium in your diet, as these support the proper hormones and digestion. Recommended foods include kiwi, cherries, bananas, nuts, chamomile tea, as well as oats and turkey meat.
