Unfortunately, we live in a time when annual news about fires in Europe no longer surprises anyone. Most of them are caused by climate change, high temperatures, and less rainfall. The lack of rain causes continuous droughts in countries like Greece, Spain, and Croatia, making it much easier for fires to start. One spark is enough for the fire to devastate forests and cities. This is precisely what's happening near the Croatian city of Split.
Croatian firefighters have their hands full. During the night from Tuesday, 27th to Wednesday, 28th August, they reported that a massive fire had broken out in the village of Žrnovnica, 9 miles from Split. Local media report that the situation remains very difficult, and the services are doing everything to control the terrifying element, which is spreading quickly. Tourists on holiday were forced to flee as the fire began encroaching on residential areas. Panic-stricken travellers started leaving hotels.
Huge fires plague Croatia
The Croatian fire brigade, in a statement, informed the fire in the village of Žrnovnica is still active and spreading. Currently, there are about 160 firefighters on site, facing a very long night, saving house by house. The fire brigade appeals to civilians to take shelter and not attempt to help the firefighters.
Zadar, Split, and Šibenik brigades were sent to combat the fire. Local media report that the smell of burning is noticeable even several miles from where the fire is raging. Due to the very difficult situation, authorities decided to close the county road between Žrnovnica and the village of Tugare to prevent endangering anyone.
At this moment, it is known that one of the firefighters was injured while fighting the fire. However, there is no information regarding his condition or whether his life is in danger.
