Finland braces for potential conflict amidst regional tensions
The Prime Minister of Finland, Petteri Orpo, believes that concerns about his country's involvement in war are real; however, he is convinced that his fellow citizens are prepared for such a scenario.
Orpo gave an interview to the public broadcaster Yle. When asked whether he is afraid that Finland will join the war, he replied: "Yes, I am afraid. Let's leave out the word 'fear,' but colleagues often ask me about it abroad, and I respond that we are not afraid, but we are ready for the worst."
The Prime Minister reminded listeners that their neighbour, Russia, has been conducting an illegal aggressive war for three years. "Therefore, we should be concerned. We are being intimidated, but we are not afraid, and the wise are preparing. This is a lesson that Finland has learned from history," he added.
He emphasized that the most troubling issues are the active conflicts around the world, such as the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East, as well as various hybrid operations recently observed in the Baltic Sea.
Previously, the Prime Minister considered it extremely important for the international community to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
Finnish intelligence services have also warned that Russia has intensified its spying activities against the country.
