Spiders play a crucial role in the ecosystem by preying on insects and consuming food waste. They’re drawn to warm, safe environments, but spiders are generally harmless, aside from leaving behind webs and inducing fear or even revulsion in some. The fear of spiders, known as arachnophobia, triggers some people's irrational and excessive fear response.
If you are deeply afraid of spiders, it might comfort you to know that only 3 per cent pose any real threat to humans. The majority of these reside in Australia, Asia, or Africa. However, it's understandable that you wouldn't want spiders in your home. So, how do you keep them at bay? Simply prepare this straightforward spray with a few ingredients, and spiders won't dare come near.
All you need is water and peppermint essential oil. Fill a small spray bottle with water and add a few drops of peppermint oil. Shake the mixture well, and spray it around your window sills and frames. Spiders detest the scent of peppermint and will promptly alter their course upon detecting it. Apply this solution every three days to keep spiders away from your home.
How to eliminate spiders?
Like mosquitoes and ticks, spiders are highly sensitive to certain smells. Grab some vinegar, lemon, and cinnamon from your cupboard to prevent them from invading your space. Pour a little vinegar into a spray bottle and add three tablespoons of lemon juice and half a teaspoon of cinnamon.
Seal the bottle and use this mixture to spray around your windows, window sills, and floors. Pay extra attention to areas behind the bed, wardrobe, and sofa, as these are spiders' favourite hideouts. The combined scents of vinegar, lemon, and cinnamon are highly effective at repelling them. Moreover, vinegar will also help disinfect and polish your floors.
To deter ticks and mosquitoes, add a bit of camphor and lavender oil to your spray. These scents are known to keep mosquitoes and ticks at bay. Use the spray weekly and, during the summer months, every three days to ensure insects keep a wide berth from your home. Now, you're equipped with the knowledge to keep spiders out of your house.
