Farewell serenade: Klopp leaves Liverpool in style
On Sunday (19.05), Jurgen Klopp's era at Liverpool ended. After the final whistle in the season-closing match against Wolverhampton, the German coach unexpectedly showcased his vocal skills while welcoming his successor.
On 19 May, Liverpool won 2-0 against Wolverhampton at their home ground in the final round of this year's Premier League. It was also the last match with Jurgen Klopp on the Anfield team's coach's bench. The German announced in January that he would part ways with the club after the current season.
This news shocked many Liverpool fans. Klopp took over the team in October 2015, and in almost nine years of his tenure, he won seven trophies, including the much-anticipated league title after 30 years and the Champions League. The 56-year-old managed the English team in 489 matches, restoring its status as a top team in the UK.
Klopp’s last match as Liverpool coach was a grand event for the club's community. Fans bid farewell to the German with a huge ovation, and the 56-year-old could not hide his tears of emotion. Later, however, the outgoing Liverpool coach showed his sense of humour.
During his speech to the fans, the German started singing "Arne Slot la la la la" to the tune of the hit "Life is Life." The character brought up by the 56-year-old is a coach currently working at Feyenoord Rotterdam, who is tipped as Klopp’s successor at Anfield.
Although the club has not yet issued an official statement, the German's unexpected show leaves no doubt about who will succeed him. The fans quickly picked up Klopp’s improvised song and gathered in the stadium.
In Klopp’s last season, it seemed that Liverpool would fight for four trophies until the very end. However, poor form at the end of the campaign meant that the club lost the chance for the English championship and finished the Premier League season in 3rd place. "The Reds" also exited in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and the Europa League. They were left with the consolation of winning the Carabao Cup.
