In a statement issued on Friday, Josep Borrell unequivocally criticized Iran for escalating its military support for Russia. He noted that Iranian ballistic missiles are being used by Russia in large-scale attacks on Ukraine, primarily targeting critical energy infrastructure and civilian populations.
Iran is not only supplying drones and ammunition but also ballistic missiles, which could lead to further suffering and destruction in Ukraine – Borrell said.
EU sanctions
The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs announced swift actions from the EU and its international partners, including significant new sanctions. These will cover both individuals and entities responsible for the transfer of weapons. Additionally, the EU will consider imposing sanctions on Iran's aviation sector.
The EU leaders' unanimous position has always been clear. The European Union will respond swiftly and in coordination with international partners, including with new and significant restrictive measures against Iran – Borrell emphasised.
Iran denies, Kremlin silent
Despite clear reports, Tehran has denied providing weapons to Russia. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has not refuted this information.
It is worth noting that last week, the first reports emerged claiming that Iran had delivered short-range ballistic missiles to Russia. On Monday, the European Commission confirmed the "credible information provided by allies".
International reactions
It's not just the European Union that intends to take action. On Tuesday, the United States announced its own sanctions against Iran for transferring missiles to Russia. The British Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, also announced similar measures.
