The war in Ukraine: the most important information in our live coverage

During a joint press conference with President Zelensky, Erdogan stressed that Turkey supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine. The President of Turkey mentioned that conversations with Zelensky tackled issues related to the war, the security of navigation in the Black Sea, and the compromised agreement with Russia regarding a safe passage in this sea for vessels carrying Ukrainian grain. Erdogan reminded attendees that it was Ankara that facilitated the negotiation of this agreement at the conflict's onset.

Conversations "hard, sincere, and productive"

Zelensky, in return, described his dialogue with Erdogan as "hard, sincere, and productive." The President of Ukraine underscored that Russia would not be invited to the initial peace summit concerning the war with Ukraine, scheduled to take place in Switzerland.

Zelensky mentioned that a Russian representative might be involved in the following round of peace discussions, but only after a "roadmap" is established by the Ukrainian side and its allies.

Before the rendezvous with Erdogan, Zelensky thanked Turkey for its support towards Ukraine. "Our countries, the entire region, and global food security all depend on the unconditional security of navigation in the Black Sea. This goal is achievable through collaboration," Zelensky stated.

The President of Ukraine also voiced his optimism for Turkey's assistance in releasing Ukrainian citizens, including Crimean Tatars, detained by Russia.

The AFP agency has reported that Vladimir Putin, the dictator of Russia, intends to visit Turkey, though the precise date remains uncertain.

Significant position of Turkey

Ever since the onset of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Ankara has striven to maintain cordial relations with both Moscow and Kyiv. Erdogan frequently positions himself as a mediator in this conflict. Nonetheless, Turkey's close ties with Russia have complicated its relationship with the West, leading to accusations of enabling Russia to sidestep sanctions.

The French agency AFP highlights Turkey's strategic location in the Black Sea and its control over the Bosphorus, which connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. These elements permit Ankara to play a pivotal political and economic role in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
