For many years, drivers in southern European countries have had to contend with extreme heat, which damages the paint on their cars and causes tyre damage. However, there is a somewhat controversial method that can extend the lifespan of tyres.

Every car part requires special care and proper treatment to remain reliable for many years. One cannot expect the engine to run flawlessly if we do not regularly change the oil. The brakes will not function properly if we do not replace the pads or discs on time. Air conditioning should be operated even in winter and regularly serviced for the sake of its mechanism. The same is valid for tyres.

It is necessary to minimise the impact of adverse conditions such as extreme heat to make them last for many years. This means maintaining proper pressure and protecting the tyres from direct sunlight. Sunlight, especially intense sunlight, causes the tyres to heat up significantly. Prolonged exposure to such conditions causes the compound from which they are made to harden and lose its properties.

As a result, it may become necessary to replace the tyres, even if the tread is not yet worn out. The tyres may simply lose some of their ability to maintain grip. This means additional expense. However, there is a way to avoid such a situation.

In southern Europe, drivers can sometimes be seen covering their tyres with cardboard, thus protecting them from direct sunlight. Although this might look somewhat unsightly, since there are drivers who choose this solution, it works.

If you decide to use this trick due to the prevailing heat in the country, it is worth remembering to remove the cardboard before setting off. Otherwise, it could scratch the delicate paintwork, especially if you use elements of boxes joined with staples. To avoid such a situation, leaving yourself a reminder, for example, a note with the word "cardboard" or something similar stuck on the steering wheel is enough.
