Drake Hogestyn, best known for his role as John Black in the soap opera "Days of Our Lives," passed away on Saturday, a day before his 71st birthday. The actor had been battling pancreatic cancer, and his death was announced on the official profile of the series on Instagram.

It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Drake Hogestyn (...) After putting up an unbelievable fight, he passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones. He was the most amazing husband, father, papa and actor. He loved performing for the ‘Days’ audience and sharing the stage with the greatest cast, crew, and production team in the business. We love him and we will miss him all the Days of our Lives, the statement reads.

Almost 40 years on screen and the iconic role of John Black

Hogestyn was associated with "Days of Our Lives" for nearly 40 years, appearing in over 4,200 episodes during this time. His portrayal of John Black, especially his relationship with the character Marlena Evans, played by Deidre Hall, became one of the most famous romances in the history of American television.

Recalling their long collaboration, Hall spoke of their characters as a model for viewers, teaching that love and loyalty can overcome adversity. In 2018, the actress remembered the moment when it was decided that Hogestyn would become her on-screen partner.

Nobody came close to being the kind of figure, and having that sort of magic and chemistry and the male hero attraction [we created with Drake] - said Deidre Hall.

Tribute to the late actor

Hogestyn's death moved many of his colleagues, who paid tribute to him on social media. Kristian Alfonso, who plays Hope Williams Brady, expressed her pain in a touching Instagram post:

I’ll always remember you as a loving, loving father, husband and Dear friend but mostly an incredible, passionate human being, generous and immensely kind, always …… Thank youuuu for the love you gave us all everyday Drake on set and off you were always our hero.

Colleagues and fans of the actor emphasise not only his talent but also the exceptional personality and kindness that he shared with everyone around him. Genie Francis, who played alongside Hogestyn for years, remembered him as a "wonderful and kind man" and highlighted the great love he showed his wife and children.

Family life and legacy

Hogestyn left behind a rich artistic legacy and, above all, a family – his wife, Victoria Post, four children: Whitney, Alexandra, Rachael, and Ben, and seven grandchildren. Fans and friends of the actor unanimously emphasise that his departure has left a great void, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who had the opportunity to work with him and know him.
