disguised prosperity: turkmenistan's facade for US envoy
The authorities in Turkmenistan prepared a "Potemkin village" specifically for the visit of the US ambassador. Among other things, English teachers were disguised as shopkeepers. All this was done to create the best possible impression on the guests.

Preparations for the visit
Alongside disguising the teachers, the market stalls were lavishly stocked, even though in reality the bazaars face difficulties with the supply of basic food items.
Additionally, the authorities banned vehicles manufactured before 2015 from travelling on public roads. In workplaces and schools, discussions were held about how to appropriately answer questions regarding living conditions and supplies.

Journalists from Radio Svoboda did not receive a comment from the authorities on these actions; however, such practices are well-known in Turkmenistan during visits from prominent figures. It is unclear if Ambassador Rood had the opportunity to assess the English proficiency of the "shopkeepers," as the media focused on official meetings.
