Garlic is a grocery item that isn't part of everyone's diet. Much like horseradish, it has its avid fans as well as resolute detractors. This is largely due to the distinct taste and smell of garlic. For the same reasons, the spread we will discuss today may not be to everyone's liking. However, those fondly fond of garlic will surely enjoy it.

Why is it worthwhile to eat garlic?

Eating garlic (or a spread made from candied garlic) delivers a host of impressive health benefits. Our ancient ancestors understood this, too. More than 1500 years before the birth of Christ, early Egyptian doctors were already utilizing it for medicinal purposes, and the likes of Hippocrates even admired garlic.

Our current scientific understanding lets us truly comprehend the value of garlic. It has been found to possess antiviral and antibacterial properties and reduce blood pressure, sugar levels, and bad cholesterol levels. Moreover, garlic is also a cancer preventive. Research suggests that regular consumption of this product decreases the risk of prostate and colon cancer.

Garlic as a spread

Now that we've established why garlic benefits our health, it's worth exploring how to incorporate it into our diets. The potent taste and smell of garlic can make it difficult for some people to consume raw. Luckily, there's a solution - you can prepare a milder garlic spread. You'll need simple ingredients: garlic, olive oil, and rosemary.

We start by separating the garlic into cloves and peeling them. We then transfer these to an ovenproof dish, drench them in oil until well-covered, and season with fresh rosemary twigs. Place this in an oven preheated to 120 degrees Celsius (rounded from 248 degrees Fahrenheit) and bake for an hour and a half.

The garlic becomes super soft through this candying process, making it a breeze to spread on a sandwich. The result is a fragrant yet mild, slightly rosemary-infused spread (you can also add salt to taste), which makes a delightful alternative to regular butter. Bon appetit!
